NATIONALISM: FROM CONCERT TO COMPETITION

RECAP
In chapter ten we learned all about Nationalism. Nationalism is a strong feeling in and devotion to one's country. In the early 1800s Nationalism started to rise in Germany which we learned about, but it originally started in France. Nationalism was a huge part of Europe. Revolts started to come about when the king would tell the people they had no voice. The people had no say in the government. The people who were for Nationalism wanted everything to be equal. They had so much pride in their country they really cared about what was going on and this, my friend, was the beginning of NATIONALISM.

REVIEW
For the puppet show, my group discussed how Italy became unified. We explained in detail how certain people were really involved in unifying Italy. We dicussed the negatives and positives of the people and the expierence. I thought we did a good idea about getting the different character roles everyone had. We had good - and cute, I might add - puppets that were very accurate I thought. We had an immigrant with beat up clothes and a United States flag and we had how King Victor Emmanel II came to be. We also had the pope and Mazzani the nationalist that was well explained.

The easiest thing to relate the unification of Italy to is simply the unification of Germany. Italy was smarter and so much simplier. Bismark went through a lot of trouble by making people think that they were getting so much benefit from the unification. The stupid nationalist just ate it all up and believed it all. People saw how smart Bismark was and started doing the same thing. Stupid nationalist.

REFLECT & RE-INVENT

I think nationalism is good for some people, but I personally think nationalists are stupid. They have so much pride in their country they don't even notice what is in front of their face. They got played so bad. They all did. It can be more useful to global societies though because it will give them something to be proud of and it will make them work harder to maintain that and only make it better. It will be kind of like athletes. One is so good and it makes another push harder and wanting to be better than them. It could be good. I could see it.

URBANIZATION & INDUSTRIALIZATION

RECAP

Urbanization and Industrialization was an important period for Europe in the late 19th and 20th century. The main emphasizes was on the switch from steam to steel. It just seemed like everything was coming together. There was new technology that helped every aspect of life. The new technology allowed tools, bridges, dynamite, battery, electric motor, light bulbs, automobiles, telegraph, telephone, radio, and railroads to be built. Another huge advancement was hospitals' health care. They had better sanitation, vaccines, anesthetics, cleaner hospitals, and new cure discoveries. The cities improved with new buildings and sidewalks, but all this changing was making city life go down hill. The cities were getting over crowded and they started to have a dank feel to them. A lot of good came out of the urbanization and industrialization, but they did have their downsides.

REVISIT & REFLECT
The perfect city to live in, in my opinion, would be Hilton Head, South Carolina. I think it is one of the most prettiest cities I have ever seen. Hilton Head has a beautiful beach and parks. The island is like a microcosm of the whole world because you are on that island and it seems like the island is the onlt place that exsists. It is very peaceful. The temperature is just perfect too! It never gets extremely hot and it never gets extremely cold. During the winter it never usually gets lower than 40 degrees and in the summer it barely gets to 90 degrees. Hilton Head is very known for it's beauty and biking is very encouraged. Parasailing and kayaking are also other activities. It is beautiful and it's a blast! But there are some negative aspects of Hilton Head. When staying on the island there are high risk of hurricanes and also there are a lot of tourists and we all know how that can get.

SUM UP WHAT YOU LEARNED IN SEMESTER I

I have had to learn about so much this semester. I have had the chance to learn about Afghanistan and many other countries, and Guns, Germs, and Steel, urbanization and idustrialization, and nationalism. In August 2009 I did not now about Afghan women and how much danger they have been in all these years. It really has made me open my eyes and look at the world around me. I learned that geography really affects everything in the world. I finally understand what nationalism is. I also understand why countries are so poor and why they can't get themselves out of the mess they are in. About myself, I have learned that projects help me better than just really a book and doing worksheets and taking notes. It makes me remember what I have learned. I get a little frustrated with the whole no binder thing, but it's okay. I can live with it.

GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL.

RECAP

If I learned one thing from Jared Diamond in Guns, Germs, and Steel it is that geography is the answer to everything. Geography impacts every aspect about the earth. Geography determines how rich an area is or even how many people are about to survive there. The geography determines how rich an area is by what resources the geography gives them, such as a lot of water or steel. Geography affects if some people live by diseases. Such as when Europeans went to Africa, the Europeans were carrying diseases and they did not know about it because they were immune. The Africans were not so lucky, they were not immune. The Africans got really sick and there was no cure. They got sicker and sicker and they were dying. But eventually the Europeans luck ran out, they started getting really sick too because they made a civilization near water in Africa and they were getting deadly diseases from misquotes. A lot of people started dying and it became an epidemic.

REVISIT

Algeria is a country in Africa that suffers from poverty today. Algeria was ruled by France for more than a century. They fought hard against France and then finally got their independence in 1962. Algeria's poverty is rooted at the end of France's rule over them. When Algeria gained their independence things were looking good for them with opportunities in employment and extending social benefits. Then the economic conditions were not looking so hot. The oil prices were falling and for years the state was not under control and it all caught back up with them. Then now unemployment is starting to increased and it has seriously afffected the countryside. It is more serious among younger people and unskilled workers.

REFLECT

When I think of "geographic luck" I think of how lucky I am to not have to face the problems other countries have to. The impacts of it can be not noticeable or severe. Some people are just unlucky. They have great resources and everything, but they don't have enough money to get to it all because of the geography. Africa is one of the main ones affected by this. The poverty is so great over there because of the "geographic luck."

Afghanistan

RECAP

The research I did on Afghanistan was about the Afghan women and what they had to go through. The research I did really explained the hardships that the Afghan women went and still go through today, such as not being able to go to school, wearing the all covering burqa, restriction from public life, the violence men put upon them, not being able to vote, forced marriages and the risks of childbirth. The women were not even allowed to seek medical attention from a male doctor. The women were never to go out of the house for a public life. When they did step out of the house they had to wear their burqa. The women also had to be escorted by a male when they left the house.

REVISIT

Today, some of those things have changed like some women are able to go to school now and women no longer have to wear their burqa. Other things have changed, but the women are too afraid from what the mean might do to them. Such as, the women are allowed the vote and go to school, but the women are afraid of getting acid thrown on them or poisoned and the schools being burned down. Even though things might seem better, some things still have not changed like the women are still forced into marriages, they are still treated in a violent manner and the risk at childbirth is still extremely high. The average life span for an Afghan woman is only forty-four years old. That is the lowest average life span in the world.

REFLECT

The situation in Afghanistan is not good at all. They do not even have a sense of Nationalism. Afghan men do not think of women as actual people. They keep them inside and refuse them of an education. When the women do go out to try to receive an education they are in extreme danger. They could get poisoned or burned. If Afghanistan had Nationalism then they would treat the women equal and make life better for them.
